Aves Theater Revving Up

Cast members of the Aves Theatre fall musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, have gotten used to using strange techniques while running scenes. The director, John Whapham, likes to add an extra kick to rehearsals.
During a rehearsal students were directed to repeat the scene, but using a “creepy ballad of Sweeney Todd style” as much as possible. Whapham explains to them that every scene requires this much energy, even if it is slow paced.
“Rehearsals might be long, but it will pay off because the show is going to be amazing!” said Kelsey King, 9, cast member. Rehearsals can be lengthy, and it is important to keep energy up.
The show has a unique aspect that sets it apart from other productions. Joseph is predominately singing with only a handful of spoken lines. That means a huge amount of music to learn and scenes to choreograph.
“The show is so much fun because it is all singing,” said Noelle Plageman, 10.
Students are positive about the production. When asked, cast members described the show as ‘colorful’, ‘energized’, ‘hilarious’, and ‘well done’, among other adjectives. The theater has opened many opportunities for students to perfect skills or try new things.
“Theater helps you meet new people,” said Katrina Hilvers, 9. |
