Student Council is not only a group of students with leadership skills, ranging from freshman to senior class, but also a yearlong course that takes place everyday during seventh bell.

Currently the group is very busy organizing various events for the students at SHS.

Among these events are the Mr. Sycamore fundraiser, Winter Formal, and a blood drive scheduled for February.

The Mr. Sycamore pageant is a contest between multiple representatives from each grade to see who can raise the most money for JDRF, a charity for juvenile diabetes.

“I think that Mr. Sycamore is good because it gets students involved with fundraising,” said Amy Liu, 9.

The show will take place on Jan. 29 from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. in the main auditorium.

Aside from the tickets, money is also raised through students ‘votes’, which are placed in representatives’ jars. The votes reflect the student’s choice that the contestant they picked has the most ‘attractive’ eyes, arms, and smile.

The contestant who garners the greatest amount of money is crowned Mr. Congeniality.

In order to prepare for the event, Student Council divides into multiple groups that deal with various aspects of the show.

“I think [Mr. Sycamore] will turn out great and we are all very excited about it. It’s a good way to hang out, have fun, and help out people who are diagnosed with diabetes,” said Nancy Hsu, 11, a Student Council member.

Some groups include the Main committee, which picks out the contestants and takes pictures of them, and the Decoration committee, which makes signs and posters to place around the school, and encourages students to attend the pageant.

“It puts the ‘fun’ in fundraising,” said Liu.
