Three arrests made for marijuana possession
Ohio laws for marijuana possession

Blue Ash Police Department Badge
While Ohio has decriminalized its laws against marijuana, the legal consequences for marijuana possession remain high for minors. For adults, possession of less than 100g of marijuana is a $100 fine, while for minors it is much stricter. Possible penalties include but are not limited to: house arrest, suspended license, fines, and mandatory attendance of drug classes (think driving school but much worse).

The Blue Ash Police Department arrested three adult males for marijuana possession from March 2-March 10. Because the privacy of the individuals arrested should be protected, details like names will not be used.

But, few SHS students know the legal consequences for marijuana possession. Only the laws pertaining to possession of less than 100g of marijuana will be discussed, because most SHS students, if arrested for possession, would not have more than 100g.

According to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, “The state (Ohio) has decriminalized marijuana to some degree. “

For a first time adult offender, the possession of less than 100 grams of marijuana is a citable offense only, with a fine of $100. A citable offense is similar to a traffic violation, like a speeding ticket.

But, for a minor, the legal consequences are much tougher.

While the laws for minors for marijuana possession are difficult to find online, it is clear from personal stories that there are much stricter punishments for minors, like possible suspension of license, house arrest, or having to attend drug classes.

Besides the legal consequences, the ramifications of an arrest for possession with parents, peers, and with school also make being caught with marijuana much worse.
