Sophomores prepare for debates

The sophomores have been spending the past few weeks working on a class wide project, debates. Sophomore debates have been a tradition at Sycamore for many years.
This year’s debate topic is one that many people know a lot about; school uniforms. Many students have debated or researched this topic in previous grades. Some students like this year’s topic, while others were hoping for a more advanced debate topic.
“I usually debate a lot more complex topics on the school debate team, which makes sophomore debates really easy to research, but it limits the arguments you can use and the types of cases you can run, especially on the negative side. But I’m really excited to be debating policy, regardless of the topic,” Rashmi Borah, 10.
Beginning next week, the students will have their in class debates which are for the students’ grades. These debates consist of two teams from the same class competing against each other.
“I am pretty nervous for the in class debates because you never know what will happen and there is pressure on you because it is for a grade,” said Leah Reis, 10.
After the in class debates, five students from each class will be chosen to continue on to the class-wide tournament. One team will be chosen as the winner after a final debate in front of the entire sophomore class.
“I would like to make the all star team for my class because the tournament seems like a lot of fun,” said Brynn Sharp , 10. |
