Mock trial uses precedent to prepare

Before the Mock Trial team even receives the case from the Ohio Bar Association, they are already making progress.
“I am currently reviewing old cases to get a better idea of how the procedures work. Since I was not involved last year, this will refresh my memory,” said Evan Gildenblatt, 12. Gildenblatt enjoyed being part of mock trial when he participated in his sophomore year.
The potential members have been assigned to small groups to work. They have been given old court cases to review and study, along with legal terms to define. Some of these terms include heresy, disposition, and plaintiff. This is especially important for new members who are unfamiliar with law.
The students understand that knowing how previous cases were decided will give them a better idea of what tactics are successful. It is very helpful to look at the judge’s notes to see what tactics were beneficial to the winning side.
Last year’s case involved homeless people harassing a small town. The students have analyzed what statements and arguments helped various teams with the side they took.
“I really want to work especially hard this year so we can hopefully make it to the state championship,” said Divya Indrakanti, 12.
Since it is Ms. Holly Shall’s first year coaching the Mock Trial team, senior Abhi Singh, 12, has taken over many of the organizational responsibilities.
“I have tried to help figure out who will be on the team and have started to give the members some advice about the club,” said Singh. |
