The Acting Ensemble “A” class practices their lines. The monologues will be performed in front of their friends and family on Jan. 19 at 5:00 pm. “I’m not really nervous for my monologue. I’m actually excited to show other classes what I’ve been working on,” said Samantha Misali, 12. (Image Credit: Tori Swart)

All students have been preparing for the challenging tests that mark the end of the first semester. For most, the exams involve many multiple choice and possibly short answer questions.

For the Acting Ensemble class, however, a monologue is required, ranging from 30 seconds to a minute and a half. The class must perform their monologue flawlessly in front of their peers and parents.

“For some classes, this is only a portion of their exam. For the Acting Ensemble class, however, the monologue is the entire thing,” said Mr. John Whapham, Aves Theater director.

The students have been preparing for these exams since the end of October, when they had finished their one act performances. Some even performed their monologues at the Overtures Competition. They have been fine tuning them since.

“At Overtures, you want your piece to be at its best. Any little kinks, if there are any, are straightened out afterward,” said Elliot Handkins, 11.

There are two types of monologues to be chosen from- a pre-1900s classical piece, and a more contemporary piece.

While the actors and actresses are performing monologues, the tech side of the class also has an assignment.

“We need to build a scale model of an ‘Into the Woods’ set. We build and design it ourselves,” said AJ Biberschwal, 12.

The sets wouldn’t be built just for the exam- they could also be used in the upcoming musical “Into the Woods”. The monologues could also help for the future.

“It helps a lot with preparing for college auditions,” said Samantha Misali, 12.
