As students at SHS sign up for fall classes, few can say that they are trailblazing. Anesu Moyo, 10 is one of those few. This fall, Moyo will be the first African American male at SHS to take AP American History.
Many students at SHS are shocked by this news. As a school that prides itself on its diversity, it is hard to believe that other black males have not seized this academic opportunity.
“I was really surprised to hear this because we always talk about how diverse our school is,” said Lauren Thompson, 10. SHS students shared similar disbelief.
“I was definitely surprised myself by the news,” said Moyo. Moyo only discovered this himself on Wed. Feb. 1, Recommendation Day.
AP United States History has acquired a nasty reputation that has many students dropping down from Accelerated World History and AP European History.
“Mz. [Marilyn] Ray told me no pressure, but that I would be the first black male at our school,” said Moyo.
