Though enthusiasm from SHS students at pep rallies can be lacking, the entire student body rises from the bleachers to cheer when the Kings Firecracker Jump Rope team starts a performance. Though enthusiasm was somewhat lacking during the beginning and middle of the pep rally which took place on Feb 10, there was no stop to the applause once the Kings Firecracker Jump Rope Team entered and began their remarkable performance.

“They are awesome. I would say that they are the highlight of the pep rally. I enjoy how everyone stands up on their feet and cheers for them,” said Sion Han, 12.

The team began through an elementary school physical education exposition by Coach Lynn Kelley. The response was so positive that it was suggested that they perform at a high school basketball game.

Since then, the Firecrackers have had performances at high school, college, and even NBA games.

“They are amazing. They are even more impressive since they are so young,” said Lauren Thompson, 10.

Firecrackers join the team in tryouts when they are in grades four to eight, and tryouts are open to students in the Kings Local School District. Firecrackers practice approximately two hours a day, five to six times per week.

The hard work pays off; each performance is awe inspiring, and the girls have had chances to perform not only at games, but also one year at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and at a Presidential Inauguration.

“The firecrackers do a similar routine every time, but they’re just as entertaining. They’re one of the best parts of the pep rally,” said Nayan Mandan, 11.
