As the SHS dance team leaves the basketball court, the student section begins to stand and scream.

The Kings Firecrackers are prepared to take the stage, and the crowd has gone wild before they have made a move. Meanwhile, the Flyerettes stand in the back gym looking less than pleased.

On Feb. 10, Flyerettes celebrated their Senior Night by performing at the pep rally as well as the varsity boys’ basketball game. However, the Firecrackers, whom the SHS student body looks forward to all year, were also booked for both events.

Consequently, the Flyerettes were effectively upstaged.

“It’s embarrassing. They could have performed any other time, but not on my Senior Night,” said Stephanie Kessel, 12, co-captain.

While the senior dancers had hoped to end the year on a good note, the Firecrackers managed to dash it.

“You hope that people will see you on your last performance and remember how good it was. But people don’t remember Flyerettes after watching Firecrackers,” said Marjorie Keith, 12, co-captain.

That sentiment became clear when the students became visibly exponentially more excited as the Firecrackers were announced.

“I enjoy watching them just like everyone else, but it’s sad when people enjoy them so much more than us,” said Samantha Weiss, 10, Flyerette.
