For the first time, the Model UN club members participated in the Model United Nations of the University of Chicago conference. The students made an impressive appearance in one of the most prestigious events in the country.

The conference, which took place from Feb. 2 to Feb. 5, pushed members to new heights. Working each day in a heated atmosphere, SHS did indeed keep up with the other delegates, if not better.

“I think the SHS kids were real standouts, especially at a conference with over 2,300 students,” said Beth LeBlanc, club sponsor.

Because of its size, club members were pushed to new heights. The MUNUC conference is hosted every year (SHS joining into its 24th), and only the top high school students go and debate.

“We have a lot of very strong upperclassmen this year who have won awards in past conferences,” said LeBlanc. “Going to the conference let us compete on an even larger scale.”

As opposed to previous conferences, where most members of the club participated, only a select few represented SHS at MUNUC.

“The conference really challenged the kids to think deeply about issues around the world. It was a four day long, extremely grueling experience,” said LeBlanc. “However in the end, it was definitely worth it.”
