Band, orchestra, and choir members from all over Cincinnati participated in the District 14 Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) solo and ensemble competition on Sat. Feb. 11 at Mildford High School.
Students play in performances ranging from solos to ensembles containing 20 people or more.
“Playing in an ensemble is nice because you can focus on different areas than with a large group. We learn how to balance volume and become more aware of the other parts,” said Bradley Kirkedall, 11. Kirkendall played cello for a string quartet in the competition.
“Easily one of the best performance of the day,” said one of the judges regarding a choir ensemble.
The participants are rated on a one to five scale, one being superior and five, poor. The participants from SHS received all superior and excellent ratings.
“I like participating in band activities on a smaller scale when you can collaborate with the group,” said Aditya Roy-Choudhury, 10 who received a superior rating for the Brass Choir Ensemble.
Band and orchestra now look forward to several events this spring. Mar. 3 both band and orchestra from across the district will be playing throughout the day for the Pancake Day and Fine Arts Fair.
“Pancake Day is a big deal for SBOB. From the Flower & Plant Sale to the pancakes, it is a really valuable fundraiser for us,” said Roy- Choudhury
SHS Orchestra will play 1:00 p.m., and the bands will play throughout the day. Mar. 2, the Orchestra will participate in the District 14 OMEA large orchestra competition. They look to defend their Superior rating from last year.
