Q: What is the Flyerettes Mini Clinic?
A: The Mini Clinic takes place on a Saturday once every year and we teach younger kids, up to junior high, a dance. The Flyerettes team spends a couple of practices learning the dance for the kids but overall they don’t take long for us to learn because it is a basic level dance.
Q: Do the younger kids get to perform for an audience?
A: Yes! The Friday following the Saturday we teach it to them is their performance. In past years they have performed at JV basketball games at half time but this year they will be dancing at Varsity, the same as us.
Q: How long does the clinic last?
A: Its set time is 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. And although the clinic was supposed to happen on Jan. 20 it was cancelled due to the ice on the streets. Since it was cancelled it is our [the Flyerettes] job to call every single one of the little kids who signed up and let them know that the clinic was canceled. The list of names was divided evenly so we all had our fair share to call.
Q: Will it be made up?
A: Of course, we have a show to put on, after all! The date for the clinic has been moved to Saturday Jan 28. It’s still from morning to early afternoon and it will not be any different from what it would have been on the 20th.
Q: How do you know who teaches the dances to the kids?
A: Since there are kids of all ages it’s too hard just to teach them all together because the kids in 8th grade are going to pick it up better than the kids in 3rd grade. For that reason we split up the Flyerettes and the girls go and instruct different ages. It all comes together better that way.
Q: Did you do mini clinics before coming to the high school? Do you think it helped you in the long run?
A: I personally started participating in mini clinic when I was in 3rd grade, and I continued doing it all the way up to high school because I loved to dance. I definitely think it was an advantage because you adapt to their styles of dancing and get used to how they teach to you. When I joined Flyerettes as a freshman there were not too many surprises for me because I went to the mini clinics and I liked that. For any girls who are interested in becoming a Flyerette, I strongly recommend participating in a mini clinic!
Q: The Flyerettes season is coming to an end shortly, do you think next year the team will still be strong?
A: Absolutely because the majority of our team right now is the sophomore class and we will still be here for the next two years. We have been dancing together for almost a full two years now and all of our bonds have grown which makes us a strong team. We will miss our seniors a lot, but they have left us with good knowledge and taught us how to be a family together even when we are not performing. I’m already excited for our next season. Plus, we still have a couple dances to perform not at basketball games so our season is extended a little further.
