The boys’ tennis team is already into the swing of things even though the season has not begun yet. Morning conditioning and Gold Club are just a few activities that players participate in during the off season.

An intense way to start the player’s day happens at 6:00 am during morning conditioning. Players participate in drills and other workouts for a half hour every Tuesday and Thursday. This prepares the hopeful players’ for a tough and grueling season ahead.

“It can be a challenge waking up early knowing that you have a workout ahead of you, but in the end, you realize that the workouts are to your advantage and will keep you in good shape for the season,” said Jamie Pescovitz, 9.

Another incentive to do well is the Gold Club. Every Sunday, players email Mike Teets, coach, their playing activity from the week for points that accumulate throughout the off season.

At the end of the season, the player with the most points wins a trophy, and recognition throughout the SHS sports world.

“Remember to tell Coach Teets your activities ahead of time, so you can get the maximum amount of points offered each week,” said Naveen Viswanath, 9.

The activities and events that the players compete in during the off-season help build momentum to do well during tryouts.

“Even though we lost a good amount of players from last year’s senior class, we have some good players coming in, and a good junior and senior class. We should be able to pull off a very successful year and hopefully bring back the GMC title for a third straight year,” said Nikhil Grahndi, 11.
