In the Mirror Room, several props and set pieces have been kept in memory of the show they are from. The “
WORKING” sign comes from “Working” the musical, the hanging red flag from “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat,” and the organ comes from “The Phantom of the Opera.” To keep the mirror room from becoming to cluttered, these set pieces will eventually be reused, recycled or thrown away, but only once the kids who constructed and used them leave the High School. “For the past couple of years,” said Aves Theatre director John Whapham, “we’ve gotten into the tradition of keeping one set piece or prop from every show and putting them in the mirror room.”
This time, Whapham decided to keep “The Ousiders’” fountain. “I’m pretty proud of myself,” said Justas Jodele, 11, who constructed the fountain. To read more about Jodele’s project, look here.
On Feb. 7th, the fountain was transported to room 257 by a four man team. Now, it sits up against the green curtain, in the middle of the mirror room.
“The Otusiders” lead, Brandon Ramos, 12, is particularly happy to see the fountain make its way into the theatre’s mini museum. “I wish I could take it to my room,” he said.
Ramos got particularly close to the fountain, literally speaking. Every night of the show, fellow actor Carmel Rechnitzer, 11, playing the character Bob, dunked and pretended to almost drown Ramos in the fountain.
Overall, the decision to move this set piece into the Mirror Room seems a popular choice, and “The Outsiders” lead techies and actors are proud to see their work become part of the theater tradition of SHS.
